You gotta love it when community service intersects with creative marketing.

That’s happening in Rapid City right now as our unemployment rate shoots upward and families are thrust into peril. One business is helping these folks.

The Factory Salon Downtown is giving free haircuts to anyone who has been laid off. Dennis from the salon posted his offer as a comment to a Rapid City Journal story about another round of layoffs in town:

Before this thread goes off on a divisive negativity-fest, like the Corporate Hair Cutting Coke thread did, Im going to make the same offer to those laid off at MDU as we did for the lay offs at Coke, and likewise make a challenge to those in our community to help out in any manner you can, too.

If you have been laid off from MDU and need a haircut for a job interview or whatever, stop in and show us a paystub or something else that shows your life was affected by this lay off, and we will comp you a haircut.

Its not a lot, but it is what we can offer back. Who else can come up with something that will put some positive energy out there into our community and help these neighbors of ours who find themselves challenged in this manner?

That’s just awesome. What a great way to give something back to the community. As laid-off folks try to re-enter the workforce, they won’t need to worry about having a decent haircut. Dennis deserves a ton of credit for undertaking what could end up being a big giveaway.

Dennis’ offer also qualifies as a totally unboxed marketing idea. It’s exactly the kind of anti-marketing that build buzz and evangelists who will create positive word-of-mouth reviews. It’s the kind of thing that this blog was created to talk about. It’s also won Dennis a new customer. My next haircut will be done at Dennis’ place.

I hope you do the same.

I also encourage you to find ways to give back during these tough economic times. It’s the right thing to do. Because of that, it might grow your business, too.
